It does tie into issues with VC to a certain extent – they’re ultimately part of the same economy, after all – but even if you eliminate microtransactions from the discussion, there are still some major problems with MT. Ironically, the more pressing issue with MyTEAM’s economics concerns MT: an in-game currency that can’t be purchased (at least, not from 2K). Besides, I can attest to the viability of sticking to a “ No Money Spent” philosophy, and still greatly enjoying MyTEAM. While there is pushiness to the recurrent revenue mechanics in MyTEAM and I remain critical of those practices, I’ve covered that issue in previous articles. For once, I’m not talking about microtransactions and Virtual Currency. After making MyTEAM my mode of choice in NBA 2K21, I’ve had more firsthand experience with its troubling economics. Now, I’ll be glad to be proven wrong about any of the ideas I’m discussing here today that’d be awesome! It’s a long shot though, as seeing these things happen in future games would definitely be too good to be true. Furthermore, there are awesome features and changes that will very likely never happen for conceptual reasons, some of which aren’t particularly consumer-friendly. Of course, that doesn’t make it any less disappointing that they may never come to fruition. We realise that certain ideas – awesome though they may be – will be challenging to implement. This is something that most of us come to understand the more we learn about video game development. There are technical challenges to overcome, as well as limitations. Not everything is feasible though, and video game development isn’t as easy as many people still seem to think it is. I can also attest to the developers having great ideas of their own, and I would suggest that the times we’ve been surprised by awesome features is proof of that. Having compiled several Wishlists and been in many discussions with my fellow basketball gamers over the years, I can say with confidence that as a community, we have some awesome ideas for the games that we’re so passionate about.

The Friday Five is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to NBA Live, NBA 2K, and other basketball video games, as well as the real NBA, and other areas of interest to our community. I’ve had literally thousands of hours of fun with my favourite NBA Live and NBA 2K titles, but reflecting on those fantastic experiences, these are some of the worst aspects of my modes of choice. Although I was a long-time franchise gamer after the concept was introduced, over the past decade I’ve branched out into other ways to play basketball video games.

As is the case with the experience on the sticks, ideally the franchise, career, card collecting, and other modes will be relatively bug-free and enjoyable, but for a few quirky issues or missing features here and there. Of course, whether you’re talking about gameplay or game modes, perfection is an impossible goal.

They’ve gone from a basic single NBA season – or just three rounds of the Playoffs – to comprehensive multi-season franchise modes, career modes with connected online team play, and card-based team building modes. Fortunately, the modes in basketball games have come a long way. Deep modes can’t be enjoyed without great gameplay, but the gameplay won’t be nearly as interesting and engaging long-term without modes that keep us hooked. When it comes to the quality of basketball video games, gameplay is paramount, but modes are still crucial. This week’s Five lists the five worst aspects of my favourite modes across years of playing various basketball video games.
